Stephen Strasburg dealing with strained flexor mass in elbow
Washington director of athletic training Paul Lessard said Thursday the injury is not season ending and the ligament Strasburg had repaired with Tommy John surgery in 2011 is unaffected.

Foltynewicz extended his strong run with a solid six innings Wednesday night in a game the Braves ultimately lost 5-4 in the 11th to the Washington Nationals.
The Washington Nationals received some uplifting news on Thursday. He allowed one run and two hits with four strikeouts and no walks in the outing on 42 pitches. Forty-two pitches into his first game back, he was walking off the mound with more discomfort, though Lessard said this pain was different than the swelling in the “posterior” of the elbow that caused that disabled list stint.
The Nationals said Strasburg would get an MRI and didn’t elaborate on the severity of his injury. It’s unknown if surgery will be necessary to fix the current injury, but given it’s September 8 and Strasburg’s elbow continues to be a problem despite weeks of rest on the disabled list, there is the very real possibility that his season is over. Following the game the team announced that Strasburg will be undergoing an MRI. “We can’t count on somebody else coming in here”, Baker said.
The Nationals activated Strasburg to start Wednesday, and he felt a pinch in the elbow that was giving him the issues that kept him out since August 22. Baker said RHP Ross (right shoulder inflammation) is “progressing well” and the team is trying to determine where he’ll pitch next with few minor league games remaining.
Strasburg started out 13-0 this season, and went into this game with a 15-4 record.
Murphy posted the sixth 100-RBI season in Nationals’ history (2005-present) and the first since Adam LaRoche had 100 in 2012.
Brewers 2, Cubs 1: Jonathan Villar hit two home runs and Keon Broxton robbed Anthony Rizzo of a homer in the ninth inning to help Milwaukee beat Chicago.
Phillies: RHP Jake Thompson (1-5, 6.48) makes his seventh career start and second against the Nationals.

Before going on the disabled list, he allowed 19 runs over his final three starts, including nine over 1 2/3 innings against Colorado last time out.
