Washington recalled righty A.J. Cole to start in Strasburg’s place Monday at Camden Yards.

Dusty Baker was asked after Strasburg got shelled in Coors Field in Colorado if he had any concerns about the 28-year-old right-hander’s health, but he said, “No”. The right-hander was optioned on August 20 after two days on the big league roster, though he did not appear in a game during that time.

Cole is 8-8 with a 4.26 ERA in 22 starts for Triple-A Syracuse this year.

He missed 17 games with an upper back strain, from June 16-July 3.

His last three starts, all losses, have been poor – his ERA rose from 2.63 to 3.59, as Strasburg gave up 19 runs on 24 hits in 11 2/3 innings, walking six and striking out 18.

An elbow injury is never good news for a pitcher, but it raises even more red flags for Strasburg, who has already had Tommy John surgery as the result of an injury he suffered during his rookie season in 2010.
