Stephen Strasburg’s strikeout surge continues as Nationals beat Marlins 13-3

Washington pulled to within 2-1 in the second as Robinson hit a solo homer to right off Fernandez.

So when manager Matt Williams emerged from the dugout Friday night and headed for a conference with Scherzer, the right-hander shouted him off the mound. “That was basically the gist of it”. Gordon has an 11-game hitting streak at Nationals Park….

“Bour, he is pretty incredible against us”, Harper said. “So we’re gonna enjoy these wins”.

Probably the worst part of Scherzer’s slide occurred two starts ago.

“He’s been doing it all year”, said Nationals starter Jordan Zimmermann (13-8), who allowed two runs in the first and none the rest of the way in his six-inning, seven-strikeout outing. “Now he is a lot more patient”, Zimmermann said of Harper, compared to past year. “Everybody around. Everybody did their job today”.

“He’s one of the best players in the game”.

The Marlins tied it in the ninth against Jonathan Papelbon, but lost for just the fifth time in 17 games. Batters have an average of.281 against him and he has given up six homers in 54 1/3 innings.

After another intentional walk, Lobaton hit a pop fly to shallow left.

Bour, a product of nearby George Mason University, had three singles in four at-bats and Yelich, catcher J.T. Realmuto and shortstop Miguel Rojas had two hits for the Marlins. “Obviously my arm feels strong at this point… just not having the innings I would hope for”.

“I didn’t do a good enough job getting around the ball”, he said.

Afterward, Yelich blamed himself for what he considered a poor throw. “So I was trying to sit on something and see if he hung it and was able to put the barrel on the ball and do what I needed to do”. “That’s what it came down to”. Fernandez was lifted with two outs in the sixth after throwing 95 pitches.

Bour made a nice backhand grab and threw home, and Harper was eventually caught in a rundown for the second out of the inning. The absolute earliest he could be back is next Tuesday in Miami, Jennings said, but given Stanton’s current status, that’s not likely. It lasted 10 pitches, with Harper fouling off five after there were two strikes before hitting a ball to right field that scored a run. “I felt like I threw the ball well, and if I could take what I had out there tonight every time, I’d take that”. The Marlins (64-83) have won three in a row and are 9-7 against Washington this year.

After plating three runs against Brad Hand and knocking him out in the fourth last Sunday, the Nationals waited a bit longer to get to the left-hander this afternoon. Over his past three starts, he has walked only three and struck out 37, a Nationals record for a three-start span.

“It got a little hairy in the eighth, but it wouldn’t be Marlins baseball if we didn’t make it exciting”, Miami manager Dan Jennings said.

The Nationals have not announced their starting pitcher for the first game of their three-game set against the Baltimore Orioles September 21, but lefty Gio Gonzalez would be the logical pick after starting in Philadelphia September 16.
