Stephens withdraws from US Open with foot injury

Marin Cilic, the 2014 U.S. Open victor, has regained his confidence after ending Murray’s winning streak in the Cincinnati final.

The men’s draw is full of risky lurkers, including Del Potro, who opens against countryman Diego Schwartzman and could meet American Steve Johnson, the No. 19 seed, in the second round. She has won title this season, at Wimbledon, and lost in the finals at the Australian and French opens. Ryan, 24, and ranked 118th, is in his seventh.

Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber of Germany drew the second seed and will face Slovakia’s Polona Hercog in her first match.

Djokovic is seeded to face either Frenchman Richard Gasquet or big-serving American John Isner in the fourth round, with France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or 2014 champion Marin Cilic, who ended Andy Murray’s win streak in the Cincinnati final, as possible quarter-final opponents.

Murray beat Rosol during a bad-tempered encounter at the Munich Open a year ago when the Scot shouted to his opponent: “No one likes you on the tour, everyone hates you”.

Asked Friday about the incident, the second-seeded Murray said he and Rosol spoke after the match and cleared the air. He insists: “I have actually gotten along fine with him apart from that day”.

Now ranked 82nd, Rosol upset Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon in 2012.

Britain’s Andy Murray insists there is no bad blood between him and Lukas Rosol as the duo prepare to reunite in the US Open first round. I just want to play my game, and go match by match and in the end see where I am.

Rafael Nadal says his troublesome left wrist keeps getting better but still isn’t 100 percent.

“But then I have to, like, remind myself that: ‘You are Serena Williams!’ You know?”

When Nadal first came back from the injury, he had to adjust his technique to avoid pain.

For Williams, it’s a sore right shoulder that she revealed started bothering her nearly immediately after her Wimbledon victory.

“I’m just now starting to feel a little better”, she said.

“I’m a Madison Keys fan because of her power on her serve and her ground strokes”, she said.

Williams is tied with Steffi Graf for the most Grand Slam titles during the Open era.

Novak Djokovic and Jerzy Janowicz meet in the first round of the 2016 US Open.

The right-handed Djokovic needs that wrist for his backhand.

In the women’s draw, Serena Williams, bidding for a seventh US Open title and a modern era record 23rd Grand Slam, begins her campaign against experienced Ekaterina Makarova of Russian Federation.

It wasn’t a physical problem that burdened Djokovic during his third-round Wimbledon loss to 41st-ranked Sam Querrey, he acknowledged. She left Flushing Meadows in a depressed daze previous year after she was upset in the semifinals by heavy underdog Roberta Vinci.

Rafa Nadal, a 14-times slam victor, showed winning form in Rio, reaching the singles semi-finals and claiming gold in doubles after a long injury layoff.

Williams could face fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska in the semifinals, which is also when she could potentially meet sister Venus.

On the women’s side, other contenders include French Open victor Garbine Muguruza and this summer’s in-form Simona Halep.

The Serbian will be confident of a strong start at the U.S. Open, with world No. 228 Janowicz having only returned in July from a six-month layoff. Ranked No. 142 because of three left wrist surgeries, the 2009 U.S. Open champ got in with a wild card.

The announcement Friday means that Olympic gold medalist Monica Puig becomes the 32nd and final seed, as Stephens had been seeded 24th.

“Unfortunately, I definitely do, which I don’t think is normal”. She’s won nine of her 22 Grand Slam titles after turning 30 years old. I just hope to be healthy and to be enabled to play the way I wish to play in US Open. Stan Wawrinka is the No. 3 seed and also on the bottom half as the men’s draw, which is missing Roger Federer for the first time since 1999. That’s what happened to top-ranked Novak Djokovic at the Olympics, when he lost to del Potro in his opening match.

The draw on Friday at Flushing Meadows has now pitted the pair together again but Murray was adamant they have patched up their differences.
