Sterling targets century of England caps

Manchester City midfielder Raheem Sterling says it was the right decision to leave Liverpool last summer.

The 20-year-old upset Reds fans when he made it clear that he would refuse to sign a new deal at Anfield and pushed for his eventual £49million transfer to the Etihad following a protracted saga that included days of sick from training at Melwood. “I’m not trying to say I proved anyone wrong, it’s just that I thought the time was right for me and my heart was saying that is what I should do and that is what I have done and I have no regrets”, he said.

But Sterling does not regret sticking to his guns to join the Blues, despite admitting it made for a “difficult” close season.

“I am just happy to be in a squad like that and hopefully I can continue my development and win trophies in the future with the football club”, the former Liverpool winger explained.

England winger Raheem Sterling is looking forward to testing himself against Europe’s best when England take on Spain on Friday, followed by France on Tuesday.

Sterling, 20, has racked up 18 appearances for England, scoring twice, since bursting into Roy Hodgson’s side just prior to the 2014 World Cup.

“If you’re winning stuff at your club, and obviously other players are winning stuff with their clubs, then it will always be good if we’re going into a tournament to have a winning mentality in the team”. “The attacking players that we’ve got – Jamie Vards he’s been on a good goalscoring streak so far, Ross has been doing really well for Everton this season”. No one likes to hear the negatives, you want to hear positives all the time. But the most important thing was I tried to not watch TV, or read anything on my phone, or anything like that.

“It’s exciting and we’ve got players who can score goals”. I was in Rio and coming away all the time we’re learning as we go.

“Everything was going on and there were people that didn’t agree with it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and my opinion was it was time for me to move on”. “He asked me a genuine question, I answered, told him exactly how I felt and it was his choice to take me out of the squad, or the team”.

‘Part of it was my development, trying to get myself better as a player, definitely help my club and definitely help my country in big tournaments’.

Spain recovered well from an early defeat to Slovakia to win Group C by five points, and conceded a mere three goals in their 10 matches, the same as England and two fewer than Belgium.

Spain will be without Real Madrid midfielder Isco for the two matches after he withdrew from the squad due to “muscle fatigue”, the team said on their official website (www.sefutbol.com) later on Wednesday.
