It was also a proud moment for Filipina beauty queens and past Miss Universe finalists Miriam Quiambao, Venus Raj, and Ariella Arida as Wurtzbach brought home the crown.
Immediately after saying her name, the audience cheered and Gutierrez-Arévalo was given a crown and large bouquet.
“The excitement of live TV was evident last night on the Miss Universe stage with more than 10 million live fan votes tabulated”, the statement said. “I have to apologize”, he said, while standing next to Arevalo. “The first runner-up is Colombia”, Harvey said.
Harvey first tweeted, “I want to apologize emphatically to Miss Philippians and Miss Columbia”. A woman stood in between the two contestants, trying to comfort Gutierrez by rubbing her back. I will take responsibility for this.
However, later in the Snapchat story, Harvey is seen talking to the press and takes the blame again: He says he should have said “runner-up” instead of “winner” when making the announcement. “Still, it’s a great night”. But the biggest, most devastating blast came from former Miss Universe owner Donald Trump.
She explained her confusion backstage after the show.
The epic blunder caught the attention of the world, making #MissUniverse2015 a worldwide trending topic on Twitter. Even the president was upset. “Majority went over to Miss Colombia, because they knew her heart was breaking”.
Amid boos from the Colombian spectators, their Filipino counterparts erupted in joy and clapping as they were joined by their countrymen in the Philippines who shouted, banged the tables and blew the horn of their vehicles.
“I was watching Miss Universe with my family”. I sold it 6 month ago for a record price. During the course of the evening, the pageant’s host Steve Harvey crowned the wrong contestant, making for an all-out awkward and live moment. “It was my mistake”, he said on the show.
He added: “Things happen”. “Steve is a comedian, so I thought he was making a freakish joke”.
Probably not as bad as Miss Colombia, though.
