Ariadna remained poised and professional as she had the crown removed from her head and given to Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach of the Philippines, and she later tried to remain positive about the huge embarrassment. She weaved a Colombian flag, smiled broadly and blew kisses at the audience. “This is exactly what is on the card”.
However, later in the Snapchat story, Harvey is seen talking to the press and takes the blame again: He says he should have said “runner-up” instead of “winner” when making the announcement. That made it two straight Miss Universe winners for Colombia, where the pageants are taken seriously.
Host Steve Hervey is going to struggle to live down the epic mistake after it was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world.
Afterward, Harvey tweeted that “I want to apologize emphatically to Miss Philippians and Miss Columbia”.
Wurtzbach was later shown laughing in a video posted on the Miss Universe Twitter.
Miss Philippines did end up receiving the diamond and blue topaz crown, but Miss Germany said she was surprise because none of the contestants voted for her.
Miss Germany refuses to elaborate, but she does add that she wishes Miss Philippines the best while holding the title. “Majority went over to Miss Colombia, because they knew her heart was breaking”.
“Still the queen”, the newlywed captioned the snap, alongside a flower emoji.
In the Philippines, celebrations broke out despite the gaffe.
“I can’t even imagine how hard it must have been for Miss Colombia”.
The competition started with women between the ages of 19 and 27 representing 80 countries.
Lacierda praised Wurtzbach’s “tremendous poise and control” after the pageant host’s mistake.
“I felt sorry for both candidates… and for all the Filipinos… who were watching live”.
