Steve McClaren: Newcastle loss at West Ham ‘a wake-up call’

Jamie Carragher commended West Ham’s star playmaker Dimitri Payet for his display in the 2-0 win against Newcastle United having adapted immediately to English football, per the Daily Star.

Former Newcastle manager John Carver has claimed current boss Steve McClaren does not know his players well enough to get the best out of them. “I am a player who likes to get forward, but this game it was just about defending well and trying to stop them scoring and I think we did that”, he said.

“When I first came to West Ham he was the first player that I wanted”. I don’t want to make excuses but the journey wasn’t the best preparation.

The Frenchman arrived on cue to curl the ball beyond goalkeeper Tim Krul from edge of the penalty area after a foraging Mark Noble had played the ball into his path.

The Hammers had another good chance 10 minutes later, as some neat interplay between Victor Moses and Diafra Sakho almost resulted in a second for Payet, but his shot on this occasion was a weak one.

Steve McClaren’s Newcastle United are still interested in current Championship top-scorer Charlie Austin, according to ITV.

Winston Reid of West Ham vies for the ball with Newcastle’s Georginio Wijnaldum on Monday night in their Premier League contest. Bilic, meanwhile, revelled in a showing which he believes validated his managerial mandate.

“It’s a wake-up call for us”, he added.

Mose, who spent last season on loan at Stoke City, was in imperious mood during his debut game for the Hammers.

Speaking about the importance of collecting wins at home, Bilic said: “It is very important”.

Three or more goals have been scored in five of West Ham’s last six competitive fixtures in all competitions and the 20/23 (1.87) quote from NetBet for that trend to continue on Monday night appears to represent decent value for punters.

McClaren said: “I have got to say, I have looked around the Premier League and everybody is a little bit inconsistent at the moment, there are only one or two teams really getting that consistency”.

Newcastle United lost to Arsenal last time out in what was a good performance, the Magpies had Mitrovich sent off after sixteen minutes and they defended valiantly for the rest of the game and were very unlucky not to hold out for a point as they were beaten by an own goal from captain Coloccini.
