Steve Scalise announces run for House Majority Leader

According to a veteran lawmaker and former leadership staff, a few junior Republicans are considering pushing an internal rules change that would forbid someone from running for an elected leadership post while not giving up the other slot.

With House Speaker John Boehner announcing today he will resign from the House at the end of October, it will be up to the majority of the members of the House now to choose a new leader.

At the time, Boehner was one of the House Republicans to come to Scalise’s defense. Most importantly, we built campaigns from the ground up based upon the ideas and feedback from our candidates. “We’ve had way too much division”.

The Louisiana congressman, who now holds the GOP’s no. 3 post, was pinned as a natural successor for the leadership spot after current House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy announced his candidacy to replace Boehner as speaker.

Scalise claimed he had the votes, but the amendment ultimately failed as Price had predicted and Scalise’s unusual move to personally confirm votes brought tension with the committee’s conservative members. “And oftentimes the bills don’t even move out of the Senate and you need to be more aggressive about addressing that and calling the Senate out”.

In his letter, McHenry referenced his experience collaborating with fellow Republicans in response to a crisis at the border, passing a balanced budget and getting Trade Promotion Authority legislation enacted. But Price, who also has done plenty of fundraising travel on behalf of colleagues, quickly garnered endorsements from influential US. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin and Jeb Hensarling of Texas – are the main competitors for the post.

In 2012, he pulled off an upset victory to become chair of the Republican Study Committee, the 176-member conservative caucus.

“I would encourage her because I really appreciate the work she’s done for us”, he said.

Republican Rep. Charles Boustany of Louisiana, who chairs the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Human Resources and has worked closely with Ryan on welfare reform and other issues, said he will support Scalise for the majority leader’s job.

U.S. Rep. Dennis Ross, R-Fla., was first elected to Congress in 2010 after serving four terms in the Florida House of Representatives. They welcomed his announcement on Friday.

“I’m gonna vote, but I’m not whipping or saying or anything”, Westmoreland said. He has not said if he will run for McCarthy’s post.

He has said he sees himself as the “more conservative voice at the leadership table”, capable of bridging the divide within GOP ranks. At least, that is the way the leadership election is structured at the moment.

“These are exhausting activities, as you can imagine”, Price told the Chamber crowd.
