Steven Gerrard surprised by standard of MLS football… and says LA Galaxy

“It’s certainly not the Premier League, but it is striving for that and hopefully one day it will get there”. That gives an ideal of the level.

“We have a very good team here”, he said. It surprised me. The level is very good.

We think Mark Hughes’ Stokealona would have a thing or two to say about that.

New York City FC make the long trip across the United States to California to take on Los Angeles Galaxy this weekend, with the newly-formed franchise aiming to take the first bragging rights in their maiden meeting with the five-time MLS Cup winners.

Gerrard, who joined the Galaxy in July, played down suggestions that Sunday’s game would be a personal duel with former England midfield partner Lampard, who remains a friend off the pitch.

In regard to Lampard’s injuries since joining the expansion team, Kreis told Crooks: “It’s been amazingly frustrating for him and all of us know I’m frustrated”. But it is insane and feels even stranger to be playing him over in America at the end of our careers.

MLS salaries for young players start at just $60,000 – that’s yearly, not weekly – and only the very top players in the league can expect to earn more than about $200,000 per annum (Gerrard himself is on a tidy $6.3million). When the game’s over we become friends again.

“When that whistle goes and for 90 minutes we’re competing against each other, it’s war”.

Gerrard and Lampard have faced each other on 33 occasions, with Lampard winning 15 to 11. We’re in a good place, we’ve got [nearly] everyone back fit and available, and we’re a strong team.

“It’s about the game and the three points”.

“When you talk about a playmaker from deep, I don’t think there have been many better – the guy is a joy to watch and nightmare to play against”.
