Triple world champion Lewis Hamilton has taken pole position in the race to the 2016 Formula One title after cruising to victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

And after surviving a nerve-jangling four-way fight for the lead at the Hungaroring yesterday, Hamilton now finds himself in the championship lead for the first time this season, six points ahead of Rosberg.

Hamilton has five victories this season for 192 points, with Rosberg at 186.

From second on the grid behind polesitting Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg, Hamilton took the lead into the first corner and controlled the race from there. “So, arguably, if you go two kph or four kph slower, or you brake a little earlier, and you drop one and a half tenths, I don’t think you are preparing to stop”. “It’s one thing Esteban got penalised with five seconds, and we still need to check the data and the timing, but I think the five seconds were taken because the gesture was done, not because he was holding him up”.

Behind him, after 25 laps, Rosberg was just 1.1 seconds away and Ricciardo, third, only 5.4 seconds adrift, ahead of the two Ferraris, led by Vettel.

There was another good battle for third place between Red Bull Racing’s Danial Ricciardo and Ferrari’s [NYSE:RACE] Sebastian Vettel.

And so it proved to be, as Button spent most of the race at the back before he retired with only a handful of laps remaining.

The engine failures mean he will use more than the permitted number of certain engine parts, which will mean a start from the back, most likely at either the Belgian or Italian Grands Prix after the August break following next weekend’s race in Germany. He exchanged places with his teammate and reigning F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton after losing in the latest race.

“And next week, there’ll be a go-kart race somewhere and there will be a double yellow flag – because somebody went off – and the marshals probably go out to help him”. A couple of races go towards one then the tide turns. Raikkonen, who ended the race sixth, would later state that Verstappen wasn’t right to defend as aggressively as he did – with the pair even coming into contact on Lap 47, resulting in front wing damage for the Ferrari. “I tried to put all the pressure possible on Lewis, but of course it is not possible to pass on this track”.

Rosberg then passed Ricciardo around the outside of Turn Two to slot into position behind Hamilton.
