Earlier on in the evening, the prelim fights saw UFC veteran Nik Lentz win with a second-round KO of Michael McBride, a late stand-in for up and coming Chechen Mairbek Taisumov, who had to pull out because of problems with his visa. Having only lost one fight in his entire MMA career, Rivera could pose a serious threat to the former Bantamweight title challenger.
He captured his title belt by beating the division’s most accomplished Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioner Fabricio Werdum (21-6-1), and now successfully defended it against arguably the most celebrated heavyweight kick boxer in Alistair Overeem (41-15-0, 1 NC).
Gall immediately went for a double leg takedown at the start of the round and he got it.
But moving forward, Miocic prefers to fight away from the area. But who’s to say where I go from here? Overeem is a kickboxer while Miocic has more of a boxing and sambo style.
Alistair Overeem is in for a surprise if he really believes Stipe Miocic is distracted heading into his first title defense in his hometown. “The process was magical”, Punk said in his post-fight press conference. Not long after Werdum came out with a flying sidekick to the face, Browne waved to the ref that there was something wrong with his hand.
