– Stoke have picked up just one point from their opening five Premier League games; their worst start to a top-flight season since 1951-52 (one point).

He said: ” The new managers – (Antonio) Conte, (Jurgen) Klopp- are allowed to run around and some of us aren’t given quite as much licence and Mark Hughes was perhaps referencing that.

“Everybody is frustrated and disappointed”, Bowen said. We have got to stick together and, hopefully, come through it. We are making silly mistakes and being heavily punished for it.

“We knew we had to deliver more crosses into the box”.

“Clearly we didn’t have a strong start a year ago and turned our season round”, said the former Wales manager.

“We need to get some wins on the board and aim for the magic 40 points and go from there”.

“Everybody is together. We have to get ourselves out of this situation, and there’s confidence we will”.

Palace took the lead inside 11 first half minutes thanks to quick-fire goals from James Tomkins and Scott Dann, and James McArthur made it three before Townsend’s strike and a consolation goal for Stoke from Marko Arnautovic.

It was not until the 71st minute that Palace put the game to bed, and this time, it was two goals in a four-minute spell that did for the visitors. “It’s been happening nearly every game we play; we’ve had to chase games and then we become too open and teams capitalise on that. I’m sure he’ll be very pleased with his performance because I am- he was terrific today”. “I think set-pieces will be a feature of our play and I think other teams will have to concentrate on our power at those”.
