England all-rounder Ben Stokes, who made his Test comeback in Old Trafford, Has probably been out for all summer with a calf injury.
Pakistan’s batting again crumbled with the second innings ending after tea as the tourists chased an unlikely record target of 565.
Pakistan bowlers struggled to repeat their Lord’s success at Old Trafford and conceded a mammoth total of 589 runs in the first innings.
Left-handed opener Masood fell to Anderson for the sixth time in Tests when he edged the paceman straight to England captain Alastair Cook at first slip.
The stand was worth 105 in 85 balls when Cook called a halt after he and Root had added 75 runs in just nine overs on Monday.
“It’s as good an innings as I’ve seen”.
Joe Root received the well-deserved man of the match award for his efforts, securing 325 runs in a fine performance behind the crease, as well as taking four catches and a single wicket.
“It’s as good an innings as I’ve seen”.
Pakistan’s captain Misbah-ul-Haq was characteristically philosophical after seeing his side go from their Lord’s zenith to something less inspiring in Manchester.
But Root returned to the middle to join his captain and the pair took England through to the close without further loss, Cook finishing on 49 not out with Root on 23.
Vince is under pressure, having made a less than spectacular start to his Test career, scoring just 130 runs in seven Test innings at an average of 18.57, but Bayliss is keen to give the Hampshire man a chance to prove himself.
The spokesman added the 25-year-old would also undergo a scan on Tuesday to determine the full extent of the injury.
Ali, however, recovered from his latest “moonball” incident by dismissing both Hafeez and Younis to leave Pakistan 102 for four.
Pakistans 83 for three became 102 for four when Younis, trying to loft Ali over the top, was caught at long-on.
