England will be without Ben Stokes for the third Test with Pakistan after he suffered a torn calf muscle.
James Anderson marked his return to global duty with three wickets as England beat Pakistan by a massive 330 runs to win the second Test at his Old Trafford home ground on Monday.
England’s bowling attack – shorn of injured all-rounder Ben Stokes – bowled with no pressure thanks to the mammoth lead put together by their batsmen, Alastair Cook (76 not out) and Joe Root (71no) adding 75 to their overnight total before declaring on 173-1.
Moeen Ali and James Anderson took two wickets each as England moved closer to victory in the second Test against Pakistan at Old Trafford on Monday.
Possible England squad (third Investec Test v Pakistan at Edgbaston): AN Cook (Captain), AD Hales, JE Root, JM Vince, GS Ballance, JM Bairstow (wkt), MM Ali, CR Woakes, SCJ Broad, ST Finn, JM Anderson, JT Ball, AU Rashid.
The spokesman added the 25-year-old would also undergo a scan on Tuesday to determine the full extent of the injury.
England’s margin of victory represented their fifth biggest Test win in terms of runs and was a far cry from the ignominy of their 75-run defeat in the opening clash of the series at Lord’s.
Also in a 13-man squad is Middlesex fast bowler Steven Finn, who also played in that match, and Yorkshire leg-spinner Adil Rashid.
Joe Root received the well-deserved man of the match award for his efforts, securing 325 runs in a fine performance behind the crease, as well as taking four catches and a single wicket. “We were below average”. “The head coach told the players after we won the first test that there was no need to relax since the entire series was still at stake”, Flower told reporters in Manchester. We didn’t bowl as well as we could (there), certainly didn’t bat as well as we could, and dropped too many catches.
Root’s second-innings score of 71 not out, gave him an aggregate tally against Pakistan of 325 runs, following his career-best in the first innings.

Of all the jarring statistics, the differential between Yasir Shah’s 10 for 141 in the first Test and one for 266 in the second was remarkable.
