An European Union high official on Monday called for the ending of intimidation and violence on journalists across the world.

“Pakistan is amongst the most unsafe countries of the world for journalists and it has become hard for media personnel to work in a secure atmosphere”, said the report.
“In the past six years, I have publicly and unequivocally condemned more than 540 cases of killings of journalists, media workers and social media producers who generate significant amounts of journalism”, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova said in a statement.
In a dedication to fallen or victimized journalists, Reporters Without Borders has made a decision to rename 12 Parisian streets after journalists who have been murdered, tortured or disappeared.
Lastly, she urged all countries to take measures through legislation, protection mechanisms and new sources to ensure that investigations and trials relating to crimes against journalists are undertaken.
“The embassy addresses have been changed to draw attention to the failure of these countries to take action and to remind them of their obligation to do whatever is needed to bring those responsible for these crimes to justice”, it said.
This impunity exasperates the problem since perpetrators of the crimes are “emboldened” when they realize they can attack their targets without ever facing justice, says the United Nations.
I urge everyone to stand up on November 2 and demand that the rule of law is fully applied when journalists are attacked and killed in the line of duty.
The day was designated by the United Nations after the 68th session of its general assembly in 2013.
One or more journalists have been murdered in Somalia every year over the past decade, and the government has proved unable or unwilling to investigate.
In Iraq, CPJ said, targeted killings have ebbed since the Iraq War. And this horrific statistic is despite the fact that, as per anecdotal evidence prevalent in media circles, the actual number of murders, threats to life and illegal detentions of journalists is far higher than the figures reported. The report also noted 22 cases of disappearances and 433 attacks against journalists and media offices since 2005. “Details of violence against media since 2001 are given below”, said the report released by the Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF), highlighting the impunity attackers and murderers of journalists enjoy in Pakistan, undermining freedom of expression in the country.
“More than half of the countries on the index are democracies with functioning law enforcement and judicial institutions, but killers still go free”.

“The cases of impunity that we are presenting are awful symbols of passivity or deliberate inaction on the part of certain governments”, Reporters Without Borders Secretary General Christophe Deloire said. However, the number of open cases of violence against journalists in Pakistan has only increased in the a year ago. There are still at least 22 such cases open in Pakistan.
