Britain’s opposition Labour Party would face Armageddon if it were to split following its bitter leadership contest, the party’s top individual donor said on Tuesday.
The rally will be chaired by Easington Constituency Labour Party vice chair and youth officer Darren Meadows, and will feature guest speakers, followed by a discussion open to Labour Party members and supporters.
Ahead of the showdown, both politicians have been touring the country laying out their vision for the party and trying to galvanise support.
It comes as Mr Corbyn played down suggestions the party could split if he is re-elected as leader, after Mr Smith warned in a Guardian interview that Labour was “teetering on the edge of a precipice”.
“Labour will pledge to rebuild and transform Britain with a bold £500bn programme of investment”.
The YouGov survey put the Conservatives on 42 per cent, Labour on 28 per cent, Ukip on 12 per cent and the Liberal Democrats with eight per cent.
More than a quarter of people who have signed up as registered #Labour supporters in the run-up to the party’s leadership election could be barred from taking part, something some supporters of Jeremy Corbyn are anxious could skew the vote.
“Yes, we are having a leadership campaign and that has probably damaged Labour support”, he said.
“I know the PLP members, they’re good people, they’re democrats, they’ll respect the wishes of our members”.
The sampling, briefed to the Huffington Post, suggests that about 35% of those who registered as supporters in the two-day window last month back Smith, while 65% back Jeremy Corbyn.
He said: “Jeremy Corbyn’s call for rent controls would be a disaster for tenants”. The party could be split. “The party that has been here for 116 years as the greatest source of social and economic justice could be bust apart and disappear”.
Earlier, Mr Corbyn said he was disappointed at an attack on him by David Blanchflower, an economist who has resigned from the committee advising the shadow chancellor John McDonnell. “I don’t recall that”.
“And I am very concerned about the suspension of the party in Brighton”.
He told Sky News: “People don’t want to be blackmailed in that way”. People don’t want to be blackmailed in that way.
“We were more than prepared to make amendments to Owen’s extremely busy diary in order to meet to discuss an issue as important as the hustings timetable”, she wrote. “I think we’ve moved on from that style of politics”.

Further concerns over the leadership voting process will also be aired on Thursday when a group of Labour members launching an urgent legal challenge.
