Storm Julia Weakens Into A depression, Meandering Off Of US Coast

Yet another monsoon storm that could become a tropical cyclone is expected to come off Africa late Friday. That said, nearly all of the showers and thunderstorm activity associated with this tropical system are located well north and east of the center, away from land.

Julia is also forecast to weaken into a tropical depression.

The center of the storm was near Savannah, Georgia, late Wednesday, drifting north-northeast at 6 miles per hour. The storm is storm is reported to have winds up to 50 miles per hour, with authorities reporting those conditions could be on the rise over the next several days.

Ian, which was more than 700 miles east northeast of Bermuda this morning, still poses no threat to land, while Julia is continuing to meander offshore the Georgia and southern SC coastlines.

A flash flood watch was in effect for coastal counties and a tropical storm warning was raised for waters just off the coast.

Late Thursday night, Karl was located about 575 miles (930 km) west-northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands and about 1,930 miles (3,105 km) east of the Leeward Islands. Recent observations indicate that sustained tropical-storm-force winds are occurring along the northeast coast of Florida from Ponte Vedra northward to the mouth of the St. Johns River. But obviously Julia poses no threat to Southwest Louisiana. The system has been given a 50 percent chance of developing over the next five days. Hurricane Hermine brought with it much more wind damage, public works says they should be able to respond efficiently to fix problems.

Phlip Klotzbach, a meteorologist with the Colorado State University, posted on social media that Julia is the first system on record to strengthen into a named storm while over land in Florida.

Even though Julia is weaker today, rough surf from the storm will create a high danger for rip currents for the state’s beaches.

Britain will continue swelter for the next couple of days with highs around the 30C (86F) mark expected. Conditions are not ripe for further development, forecasters say. While the season technically runs June 1 through November 30, numerous major storms on record have occurred during the traditional eight-week peak.
