As people in the South and East readied themselves for a northeastern storm that might bring heavy snowfall by week’s end, snow fell on much of Kentucky and Tennessee and contributed to at least one traffic-related death Wednesday.

In Washington, Mayor Muriel Bowser requested Humvees from the National Guard to reach isolated people and places if necessary.
Washington D.C. and Baltimore were under blizzard warnings on Thursday and states of emergency were declared across the East Coast as preparations were made for a storm expected to bring up 30 inches (75 cm) of snow.
“We’re open seven days a week, rain or shine, but snow could be a problem sometimes”, Harbert said.
The impact of the storm was daunting: 112 million people, more than a third of all Americans, were under either a blizzard watch, winter storm watch, winter storm warning, winter weather advisory or freezing rain advisory as of Thursday morning.
New York City is also under a blizzard watch for Saturday and Sunday, where up to a foot of snow was forecast.
Washington could see 15 to 20 inches, Philadelphia could see 12 to 18, and New York City and Long Island could see 8 to 10, said meteorologist Patrick Burke. Here is a look at the general timeline of the storm as we are expecting it. Some small details could still change.
Thackara said the Friday evening commute should remain clear, though snow will develop shortly after 6 p.m. The snow will intensify to one inch per hour overnight Friday into Saturday morning.
“Heavy snow and blowing snow will cause risky conditions and will be a threat to life and property”, the National Weather Service warned. States impacted could include states from Nebraska down to the Carolinas and up to New York City.
Forecasters say even as the weather picture comes into focus, adjustments in timing and location of the snow are still possible.
In northern DE weather officials are uncertain how bad the snowfall will be. Forecasters urge residents to reduce travel and be prepared for power outages. Expect to wake up to about a foot of snow on the ground.
The storm is expected to miss northern New England.
Washington, DC and the entire Mid-Atlantic are bracing for a blizzard.
The National Weather Service said there’s a potential for 6 inches of snow or more in the region.
Flooding appears more likely on the Tar and Neuse river basins over the weekend.
