Storms, lightning close LA beaches, causes power outages

The Los Angeles Times reported that Alaska Airlines Flight 006 took off from Los Angeles global Airport Saturday afternoon en route to Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., but quickly returned after an apparent shock.

The bridge for eastbound traffic about 50 miles west of the Arizona state line gave way and ended up in the floodwaters below, the California Highway Patrol said. One driver of a pickup truck that fell with the freeway had moderate injuries, officials said.

The Arizona Department of Transportation says I-10 westbound is closed in western Arizona near Quartzsite at State Route 95. The roadway was intact but extremely undermined by flooding and could need just-as-extensive rebuilding, Kasinga said.

The flight was canceled and maintence crews examined the aircraft, while passengers were flown to the D.C. area via other flights on Sunday, Egan told the Times.

In Moreno Valley, Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Jennifer Fuhrman said water and mud were “coming down the mountain” in the 9900 block of Whitewater Road.

Caltrans structural engineers will be on the scene this morning to begin assessing the damage at the site of the collapse and other surrounding washes and structures along that section of the I-10, Kasinga said.

“If you are unable to get into a building with four walls and a roof for cover, get into your auto!” the lifeguards exhorted. “There’s no end to the cars that are stuck out here”.

The advisory for all Los Angeles County beaches, except areas that aren’t near storm drains, creeks or rivers, will be in effect until at least 10a.m. Tuesday, according to a news release.

Public health departments in Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties all issued advisories to beachgoers, telling them either to swim with care or to avoid contact with the ocean altogether.

Meanwhile, the summer storm has helped firefighters advance on two wildfires that broke out Friday.

More numerous showers and thunderstorms will then develop Sunday night and persist into Monday from around Los Angeles to Santa Barbara to San Luis Obispo.

One year ago, a small storm created a cluster of lightning strikes over Venice Beach in Los Angeles, one of which killed a 20-year-old man. Meteorologists were stunned that a summer storm could turn deadly in Southern California in the month of July, but a year later, storms yet again appeared over SoCal beaches and forced lifeguards to evacuate several beaches.
