During its opening weekend, the highly anticipated N.W.A biopic debuted at number one at the box office with a whopping $56.1 million in ticket sales in 2,757 theaters.
The film earned million on opening weekend, a record for an R-rated film. “Not only did it over perform in terms of box office, but it also received high marks from critics and created a conversation”, boosted by its savvy use of social media (including a viral #StraightOutta meme). The music legend also confirmed last week that royalties from the album will go to a new performing arts facility for kids in Compton.
This led to a blazing summer for the studio, which saw wide-ranging hits from films for the whole family with “Minions” to the biggest film of 2015 so far: “Jurassic World“. “However, you have to have the movies to back it up, and this year they’ve had the goods”. “It’s proof that a film can be a hit at any time of the year”.
In sixth place was Marvel action flick Ant-Man with $5.5 million in its fifth week. Its five films released since May 1 have grossed more than $1.3 billion in domestic box office.
Starring Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer and Hollywood “It” girl Alicia Vikander, U.N.C.L.E.received decent reviews from critics (67% on Rotten Tomatoes) and solid audience reception (81% approval).
