As teased in Netflix’s official announcement video (seen above), Season 2 will arrive sometime in 2017 and will be comprised of nine episodes – which is up one episode from the series’ 8-episode freshman season.

The programme – which draws heavily on supernatural thrillers from the 1980s – received critical acclaim and nearly instant cult status upon its release in July this year.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly on what season 2 has in store, the show’s creators Ross and Matt Duffer brothers say that areas outside of Hawkins, Indiana, will be explored, as well as the introduction of 4 new characters.

But perhaps the most exciting news for fans is that season 2 will be longer – by one episode.

After inspiring countless memes and spoofs-not to mention several finale-obsessed back-and-forths-it was all but a given that Netflix’s eight-episode summer smash Stranger Things would return. That’s something we batted around from the very beginning.

They’ve also revealed that the new season will feature four new characters, and that Season 2 will have a James Cameron influence. In fact, he felt that it was best to really leave that up in the air for now.

In the mean time, we’re just hoping that one of these titles means that Eleven will be coming back. They’ve likened their approach to the Harry Potter series, in which each season will take place a full year after the start of the previous season. “It’s open-ended in a way that if people wanted it, and Netflix wanted it, we could explore it and continue the story line”.

Things are about to get even stranger.

The Stranger Things creators will continue the story that began in season one, with numerous original cast members returning for another go around. “We want it to feel like a big movie”, Matt Duffer said at the Television Critics Association press tour. “There’s a lot we don’t know about the Upside Down at the end of season 1”.
