Strasburg hurts elbow in first game off disabled list

But hours after coming off the disabled list, Strasburg lasted only 2 1/3 innings and 42 pitches as he left the game in the third inning after dealing with right elbow soreness for the past few weeks.

General manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

The personable Dusty Baker, who likes to talk with his players in the clubhouse, approached starter Stephen Strasburg before Wednesday’s game.

Foltynewicz extended his strong run with a solid six innings Wednesday night in a game the Braves ultimately lost 5-4 in the 11th to the Washington Nationals. Before going on the disabled list, Strasburg allowed 19 runs over his final three starts, including nine over 1 innings in a loss to Colorado his last time out. Especially after they signed Strasburg to a seven-year, $175 million extension this past May – just five months before he was set to become a free agent this offseason. He had an MRI before inking that deal, and Lessard said Thursday that Strasburg’s elbow looks “basically the same” as it did then. That’s concerning enough, but it was also Strasburg’s first start since August 17 – five days before he went on the disabled list with elbow soreness.

Asked who will take Strasburg’s spot in the rotation, Baker said the team hadn’t decided yet.

Atlanta’s Jace Peterson and Washington’s Anthony Rendon traded RBI singles in the 10th.

Mat Latos (1-0), the 10th Nationals pitcher, got one out for the win.

Reyes and Curtis Granderson each homered for the second straight day and the Mets beat Cincinnati for the 14th straight time.

The rookie kidded that he was getting a lot of playful kidding for his first career homer “being an inside-the-park, so I figured this one would be a bit easier on my psyche”.

Washington’s Daniel Murphy had a two-run single in the seventh off reliever Ian Krol, a former National.

Murphy posted the sixth 100-RBI season in Nationals’ history (2005-present) and the first since Adam LaRoche had 100 in 2012. The teams begin a three-game series Friday in Detroit.

Carrasco (11-7) allowed Colby Rasmus’ two-run homer in the fourth, one batter after the game was stopped briefly when one of the bugs appeared to get in his eye. The Nationals will start RHP A.J. Cole (1-1, 3.86). The right-hander regrouped after the home run, allowing four runs in 7 1/3 innings.
