Strasburg’s elbow injury not as severe as feared

Washington Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg left Wednesday night’s start against the Atlanta Braves in the top of the third inning with an apparent injury.

Strasburg had an MRI on the elbow earlier Thursday, one day after leaving a start in the third inning.?

He struck out opposing pitcher Mike Foltynewicz in the third then was visited by manager Dusty Baker who patted him on the stomach before removing him. “I know everyone was concerned about did he re-injure that Tommy John ligament and the answer’s no”, Nationals athletic trainer Paul Lessard said Thursday. The right-hander left after 2 1/3 innings, allowing a run on two hits.

Washington Nationals young stud pitcher Stephen Strasburg could be facing a career ending injury.

“He did everything that was asked of him (before the start)”, Baker said. “He said that he felt fine”. Wilson Ramos walked off with the bases loaded in the 11 inning to complete a sweep of the Braves. But the trainer didn’t have a timetable for when Strasburg might return. Strasburg had been on the disabled list with what the team called “right elbow soreness”, a move that seemed largely precautionary as he returned shortly after being eligible to do so.

Washington was leading 1-0 when he exited. A pitcher needs these muscles to grip and properly throw a ball.

Dodgers 3, Diamondbacks 1: Yasiel Puig homered and drove in another run, and the Dodgers beat Arizona to win their fifth straight and complete a three-game sweep. Murphy singled in the seventh, collecting his 99 and 100 RBI of the season scoring Stephen Drew and Trea Turner, and tying the game at three.

The start of the game was delayed 57 minutes, though it ultimately only rained lightly during the early portion of the game.
