Strickland, Harper suspended and fined for fight

Major League Baseball needs to ponder this question.

San Francisco starter Jeff Samardzija (1-7) permitted three runs and nine hits over four innings.

Washington Nationals’ pitcher Koda Glover continued to make a strong case for being the team’s closer as he recorded his seventh save of the season in the Nationals’ 6-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night in AT&T Park. That’s another “unwritten rule”. The problem is that Posey played absolutely no part in Monday evening’s melee and told reporters later that he considered the fracas a unsafe place to be. Trash-talking will get you drilled real fast. I’ll tip my cap and try to get the best of you next time. “It’s like somebody spitting in your face, it really is”, Knight explained the baseball code. “You’re just not going to”.

Harper took Strickland deep twice in the 2014 playoffs, and apparently it still sticks in Strickland’s gut.

Though he’s never fought, Abreu did take a step or two toward the mound previous year when Twins pitcher Trevor May hit him after Nate Jones had hit a Twin. “Obviously, I’ve left the ball over the plate a couple times to him, and he’s taken advantage of that”. I’m going with a bat. “That’s going to suck if I get hit again”. In most instances where the star player of one team is intentionally hit, the other team will target the star player of the pitcher’s team. “Especially when it’s somebody that it’s in the past”, Harper continued. “It’s not even about winning anymore. There’s (no reason) to be thinking about the first round, because we were out and they were playing Kansas City in the World Series”. “I mean, it’s so insane that it happened. It’s on his finger and he’s able to look at it every single night”. I don’t know, it’s just part of the game, I guess.

OK now, first of all, what was up with Harper’s helmet throw?!? The first is retribution. “We don’t start anything, but we don’t take anything”.

Buster Posey had three hits and an RBI for the Giants.

“They’re still going to come off the bench, ” Girardi said.

“He knows how to pitch in this weather”, Washington manager Dusty Baker said.

The Nationals were leading the Giants 2-0 on Monday when Harper came up to the plate in the top of the eighth inning. “Those were some big guys tumbling around out there”, said the catcher, noting he has a fear of any more concussions.

Washington Nationals starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez throws against the San Francisco Giants in the first inning of a baseball game Tuesday, May 30, 2017, in San Francisco.

What should have Strickland done? “We had a chance to break that game open in the second”. “Now, how do you handle it?” He walked him, and was therefore left to get out of a first-inning jam while his fastball sat at 87 and 88 miles per hour, instead of the usual 90 and 91. And you have to give him some slack under those circumstances, ” Clippard said. If they do hit me, I don’t know. And the objective pitch was thrown for a really crappy reason. And aim for the ribs.

The Giants got only two runners as far as second base off Roark, one coming on Christian Arroyo’s leadoff double in the second inning. Harper is blameless. If the suspension is upheld on appeal, Harper could be out of the Nationals’ lineup for four games, the team weakened, entirely because of a serious offense Strickland committed.
