The Windy City will live up to its nickname later this week, as a fall storm is expected to bring strong winds to the Chicago area starting Wednesday night, and continuing through the day Thursday.
The storm is part of strong system moving across the Midwest. High wind watches and warnings have been posted from New Mexico to NY.
Meteorologist Alana Nehring explains the wave potential for Lake MI with this week’s storm system.
The National Weather Service has issued a high wind watch for Thursday and Friday along the Lake Ontario shore.
Other than the powerful wind gusts, Thursday’s forecast calls for a 50 percent chance of showers and a high of 52 degrees. Lake Erie is oriented in such a way that it will see the strongest winds from the storm, with the longest fetch – winds will blow almost parallel to the lake’s south-southwest to east-northeast orientation.

“Waves will build 6 to 10 feet Wednesday night and peak on Thursday in the 12 to 18 foot range”, the weather service said in a statement. Waves up to 13 feet are possible.
