The magazine measures patient volume, risk-adjusted survival rates and adequacy of nurse staffing, among other indicators. But to make the U.S. News lists, hospitals must show exceptional performance in numerous categories.
Common care gauges medical quality and patient safety on “things hospitals see every day, ” Harder said, including three types of surgeries – heart bypass, hip replacement and knee replacement – and two long-term illnesses, heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD.
“My take is that rankings like U.S. News and Leapfrog are a good place to start, but they’re not the whole picture”, Jha said.

The specialties in which the rankings fell include cancer, (down from 27th to 39th), gynecology (down from 15th to 29th) and urology (down from 33rd to 40th). It is still important, he said, for people to seek out the opinions of their primary care physicians and others in the community who may have recently been admitted for hospital care. Purchasing the logo does not affect future rankings, according to a U.S. News spokesperson.
