Strong quake off Chile poses no tsunami threat to Hawaii

Its epicenter was 58 miles (93 km) northwest of Coquimbo and 290 miles (466 km) northwest of Santiago.

The natural disaster was registered at 22:54 local time on Tuesday (1:54 GMT on Wednesday). There are no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Chile is one of the most seismologically active areas in the world and has a high quake occurrence frequency.

An undersea natural disaster measuring 6.6 magnitude struck off Chile today, the US Geological Survey said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said there was no tsunami threat from the quake, which struck at a depth of 10 kilometres.

A strong quake off the coast of central Chile today did not generate a widespread tsunami that would threaten Hawaii, officials said.
