Strong quake shakes coastal area in northwestern Ecuador

The U.S. Geological Survey says that a shallow quake with a magnitude of 6.4 has struck Ecuador’s northwest coast last night.

“Two strong aftershocks with an epicenter in Muisne”.

“We must remain calm”, Correa said during a telephone call to a state-run television station. A hug to all Esmeraldas.

He said there are no major developments in Manabi but some people are receiving medical services for nervous breakdowns.

A second 5.5 quake struck shortly afterwards in the sea 110 kilometres away from Hihifo, USGS reported.

Some slight shaking was felt in Ecuador’s capital of Quito, which 153 kilomt3ers (94 miles) to the southeast.

No details or reports on casualties or damage are available at the moment.

Officials from Ecuador’s Geophysical Insitute confirmed that these latest seimic events are considered aftershocks stemming from the 7.8 magnitude natural disaster on April 16.

The coastal region has been hit by a series of quakes since the April 7.8 tremor that killed more than 650 people, the nation’s strongest quake in decades.
