Struggling Brewers lose again to Cubs, 6-1

The Cubs have taken the first three games of the series. That’s all the support Cubs lefty Jon Lester seemed to need, tossing 6 2/3 of three-hit ball while striking out seven Brewers batters to earn his 13th win of the season.

He went 5-for-5 with two homers, a double, five RBIs and four runs. The Brewers are 5-17 in the last 22 meetings in Chicago.

Kris Bryant homered twice and drove in five runs in a 5 for 5 day at the plate to power the Cubs. Braun and manager Craig Counsell said he might be ready to play Thursday in Chicago and is expected to play during the weekend in Seattle.

“That (MVP talk), honestly, is just a byproduct of us pushing each other and really expecting more out of one another”. “It kind of got away from me there, but we had a big day out of the offense”. Getting on base against him made a difference.

Jedd Gyorko is providing enough power to keep banged-up St. Louis going. Rizzo is a Gold Glove-caliber defender at first base, while Bryant is an All-Star third baseman who can be shifted all over the infield or moved to any outfield position. “He did a great job”.

“When you look up at the scoreboard and see 3-for-3 and 4-for-4, that’s one of those days you don’t have too often”, Bryant said.

The Cubs broke it open in the third.

Bryant then singled home his fifth run of the day to leave him 5-for-5.

But the Cubs’ bats, led by Bryant, gave Arrieta plenty of run support as the ace picked up his 15th win of the season. With two on and only one out, Brewers starter Jimmy Nelson would throw a fastball right down Broadway that Soler would crush 450 feet into the bleachers in left-center to give the Cubs an early 5-0 lead.

Bryant, who hit 26 homers while winning the NL Rookie of the Year in 2015, had his third multihomer game of the season. For Arrieta, it marked the second consecutive home game he surrendered a round-tripper after having not given up any since last July 25. Santana (6-9) walked two and struck out six, throwing 64 of his 107 pitches for strikes to win his third straight start.

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped both ends of a doubleheader and lost two key players – slugger Ryan Braun and pitcher Chase Anderson – with injuries in the nightcap.

BLUE JAYS 12, YANKEES 6: Russell Martin homered twice, including a go-ahead shot in Toronto’s eight-run eighth inning, and Troy Tulowitzki had four hits as the Blue Jays erased a six-run deficit Tuesday night in their 12-6 victory over the New York Yankees. “It’s a good lineup”.

In fact, when he walked Jake Elmore with two out in the seventh on his 118 pitch, he snatched angrily at the ball when Ross threw it back to the mound – his night of work done.

REDS 3, MARLINS 2: At Cincinnati, Brandon Phillips drove in two runs with his second double of the game and Cincinnati rallied for a victory over Miami.

Jorge Soler hits a three-run homer in the first inning Wednesday night
