Student diversity officer charged after allegedly tweeting ‘kill all white men’

The Met police said Miss Mustafa must attend Bromley Magistrates’ Court to answer charges of sending a threatening message and communicating obscene or menacing messages at the court on November 5.

Bahar Mustafa, a diversity officer at Goldsmiths, University of London, first attracted global attention last spring when she barred white men from an event on “diversifying” the curriculum, and defended herself by claiming that minority women like herself can not be racist or sexist.

“Also, if you’ve been invited and you’re a man and/or white PLEASE DON’T COME just cos i [sic] invited a bunch of people and hope you will be responsible enough to respect this is a BME Women and non-binary event only”, Mustafa wrote on her Facebook page April 15. The second is for sending a grossly offensive message via a public communication network between 10 November 2014 and 31 May 2015.

An open letter has been penned in support of Bahar Mustafa, who has been charged with two counts of malicious communications. She couldn’t be fired or punished by the school, because she actually is neither a student nor a school employee.

In a video defending her actions, Mustafa denied being racist and said all the criticism she received is an “outrageous distortion of fact”.

“The diversity officer added that using the hashtag #killallwhitemen” on her personal account constituted “in-jokes and ways that many people in the queer feminist community express ourselves”.
