“And they weren’t going to let us do the same”, Anna Sophie Tinneny told the newspaper. “We saw Sandy Hook, which were little babies and going okay, that’s enough”, said Kayla Dixon, a Countryside High School junior. State and federal bills on school safety have been introduced, and some passed – though students do not agree with many of them. He survived, but not without losing an eye. We applaud our young people for focusing the message on those lost, but we also recognize the undertones of what they mean when they speak of “change” in the way the current system operates. Students came up with the idea to assemble in the cafeteria for 17 minutes on March 14 so they could honor the victims and discuss safety and their feelings.
Students around Florida and the country staged a “walkout” on Wednesday protesting gun violence.
WASHINGTON ― Millions of dollars in donations have poured into a fundraiser launched by student survivors of the school shooting last month in Parkland, Florida. Others, including Mohanesan High in Schenectady and Canajoharie High in Montgomery County, meted out detention to walkers. One minute for each of the Parkland victims.
Students at Logan County High School didn’t walk out but had a moment of silence. This isn’t just a school safety issue; it’s an issue for anyone who goes out in public.
To be perfectly, absolutely, 100 percent crystal clear, this editorial is not about taking a stance on gun control. We are exhausted for asking nicely.
A Siena poll released Monday shows New Yorkers support the state SAFE Act and banning assault weapon sales nationally.
“This is not a political statement”, she added.
Autumn Harlow, who supports the Second Amendment, said she’s grown up with guns and cherishes memories of hunting with her father. More preschool children died from gun violence than law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
Black youth are more likely exposed to gun violence on the streets, which is more common, according to the APA. “We must make it our top priority to save these lives”.
She added that young people shouldn’t be dismissed simply due to their age.
“It’s not just schools”, she says.
Rinehart attended the rally as a representative of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a group that advocates for gun control. “We can change the world, and it can start at Broad Creek Middle School”.
“Especially after events like the Florida shooting, Sandy Hook, all these children being killed, I think people are exhausted of it”, Delzer said. “One of the things I’ve been thinking about is how politicians have been saying teenagers don’t know anything and they don’t make laws”.
I have written in this space far too often about children whose lives and futures have been snuffed out by guns – some as infants. “We need proper background checks”.
“For those skipping class and exiting the building peacefully, they were ‘pink slipped, ‘ a class suspension”, Darcy Benway, OTHS District 203 superintendent, said.
She called for a “common-sense approach” for regulating gun rights.
High school senior Anna Sophie Tinneny, who organized the protest, said she did so in the spirit of past civil rights leaders.
But the school district said Benzel was not punished for her pro-life comments.
Alfonsi later went on to ask Gonzalez, arguably the most famous Parkland activist, how she felt about arming teachers.
There were also displays detailing “red flag” warning signs of someone who may be planning a shooting, how to talk to someone about it, and a list of the 178 school shootings that have taken place since the mass shooting at Columbine High School in 1999.
