Students mourned after 3 killed near NY campus

Police say 24-year-old North Vancouver native Matt Hutchinson and Kelsey Annese, 21, from Webster, N.Y., may have been asleep in bed when the two were stabbed to death by a bitter ex-boyfriend in a double murder-suicide in upstate New York Sunday.

Police believe Kingston stabbed Annese, his ex-girlfriend, and Hutchinson to death with a knife.

“We believe that one may be a perpetrator, but we need to make sure everything else is investigated further before we make those statements”, Geneseo Police Officer Jeffrey Szczesniak told reporters Sunday afternoon. Kingston called his father before killing himself, Szczensiak said.“All indications are that Mr. Kingston used the same knife to take his own life, ” Szczensiak said.

Annese and Hutchinson were current students at the college, while Kingston was enrolled last semester, according to SUNY Geneseo.

It was unclear what the relationship between Hutchinson and Annese was, but Szczesniak said it appeared that Kingston found them together before he allegedly killed them.

The victims have been identified as SUNY Geneseo students Kelsey Annese and Matthew Hutchinson, and former student Colin Kingston.

Because it’s suspected that Kingston acted alone, without a co-conspirator, Livingston County District Attorney Greg McCaffrey said it’s unlikely charges will be pressed against anyone. “I think they’re as much in disbelief as we are”.

Kelsey Annese is seen in an undated photo provided by SUNY Geneseo.

Police say whatever happened in the minutes that followed likely was over shortly after it began.

Denise Battle, president of the university, said counsellors have been provided for Hutchinson and Annese’s teammates and for all students and faculty at the university that is about a 35-minute drive from Rochester, N.Y.

The university said Monday both the men’s and women’s basketball games that were originally scheduled for Tuesday have been postponed.

“I can say that Matt was really in the upper echelon of our department”, Chanler said. “We certainly don’t know what his intentions were when he entered that room”, he said. Hutchinson was a senior defenseman on the school’s hockey team and had also played for the school on Saturday night. A guard on the college’s women’s basketball team, she wore the number “32” because it was her father’s number when he played basketball at the college in the early ’80s. He had volunteered for more than three years at the Geneseo Fire Department, making a point to take every training opportunity despite his packed schedule as a student athlete, said fire chief Andrew Chanler.“Matt did everything at the highest level, ” Chanler said.
