Sturridge frustrated with wide role

Daniel Sturridge clarified his dissent on being played in wide positions by his manager Jurgen Klopp during Liverpool’s opening set of season fixtures.

Can, who started as one of four changes to the Reds side that lost at Burnley on Saturday, had to be taken off after 71 minutes of Liverpool’s 5-0 thrashing of Burton in the EFL Cup second round.

It will certainly be interesting to see how Klopp uses Sturridge going forward with him being made fully aware that he isn’t best pleased playing out wide. I’m a centre-forward. In the modern day game you have to try and be flexible but everyone knows my best position. I don’t know exactly what he said, but when we have talks there’s no issue about it.

“I am on autopilot there. He is a really good player with all you need when he is fit”.

“It’s not a fixed position, “stay outside the box and wait”, especially in Daniel’s position”. “We can’t just rely on Sadio but he’s been outstanding for us and he gives us something different”.

In an ideal world, I’d say both.

“The team was good today and we want to keep going for the next game of the season”.

“Daniel is a very smart player in hiding himself in positions where it is not easy to defend and it is very often in a wing position”.

“There is absolutely no problem”, Klopp said.

“We need to find a formation where players can start”. The England global gave the impression that he never feels comfortable in that sort of position, whereas he said that as a No9 everything comes so naturally to him that it feels as though he is “on autopilot”.

He added that “your movements are different” when playing “in positions you aren’t used to” and said that “you can’t play the same as if you are a centre-forward” as “everything is different”.

‘It’s flexible football. It’s about getting in and around the box’.

‘It’s only a starting position for the next offensive action of my team.

“You’ve seen in the games, Arsenal and today [what he can do]”, Henderson said.
