“At first I didn’t think I was going to fit into Barcelona’s way of playing”, he told former Liverpool teammate Jamie Carragher in an interview for the Daily Mail.

“If I had to return to the Premier League, I would only go to Liverpool”.

The Uruguay striker left Anfield for Barcelona in the summer of 2014, months after Manchester City pipped the Reds to the Premier League title. In the Premier League you never really know what is going to happen. I knew when we drew that game the league was lost. “It wouldn’t be a move for money”, Suarez explained.

Suarez was idolised by the red half of Merseyside during his three-and-a-half-year stint and, although he intends to stay in Catalonia for the foreseeable future, the former Ajax forward has not ruled out a return.

Suarez joined Barca from Liverpool in a club-record €75m transfer after the 2014 World Cup, but he initially struggled to find the back of the net, having begun his career at Camp Nou on the right wing. There is very little between the teams. You might not be in the best mood or be up for the match – but then I remember we’d go out to warm up and it would change my mentality. “They took it as a sign that I had come to help them, not to compete with them”, he added. Suarez pointed out that the three have set aside their ego, placing the team;s interests above all, which conversely has meant that the trio have enjoyed successful seasons individually.

He cites the atmosphere of the legendary stadium as particularly inspiring.

“I’d be thinking to myself: ‘I have got to score two or three today.’ The way the people transmitted that to the players was incredible”.

We miss you too, Luis!
