If the reports are accurate, Subaru plans to launch the electric all-wheel-drive crossover in the U.S.by 2021 to further meet the more stringent emissions regulations.

Subaru is planning on entering the electric crossover segment in the coming years, according to Japanese media outlets. However, spokesman Masato Saito confirmed that an electric model would most likely ride on the SGP platform, and it would likely be aimed largely at the US market. Japan’s Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun reported August 8, the crossover would be based on the Forester SUV or the Outback wagon.

When asked about the project, Subaru spokesman Masato Saito was reportedly tight-lipped on the finer details, but admitted that the North American market would be targeted should it go ahead.
