The explosion occurred in the Alamar District of the Faryab Province at around noon local time.

The attacker also died on the spot, Yaqobi said adding that “the number of casualties is expected to rise further as several of the injured are in critical condition”.

“We had received intelligence report that a suicide attacker has entered the market in Almar, so we set up a police check point to search for him”, local police commmander Saif, who goes by one name, told AFP.

The Taliban and other Islamic militant groups have expanded their attacks in Afghanistan since USA and other foreign troops withdrew at the end of 2014.

Civilians often fall victim to such attacks, with nearly 1,000 Afghan civilians killed during the first four months of the year, according to the United Nations mission in Afghanistan.

Hundreds of Afghan national security forces personnel have been deployed in the province as part of a large operation to push back against the Taliban.
