There was no exact toll from the carnage at Gamboru wholesale vegetable market as rescuers were still recovering bodies.

The information officer of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Northeast Zonal Office in Maiduguri, Abdulkadir Ibrahim, confirmed the blast, and promised to relay casualty numbers when confirmed. The woman had come on a tricycle like every other person who come very early in the morning to make purchases at the market does,”a witness said. She blew herself up as soon as the tricycle stopped in the midst of other tricycles that were dropping traders off”, Kolo told AFP.

His account was corroborated by another witness, a grocer in the market.

“I was at home when I heard a loud explosion that sent me rushing out of my house”.

A “mentally handicapped” female suicide bomber killed at least 14 people and injured 47 more last Sunday at a crowded market Damaturu, capital of neighbouring Yobe state. Soldiers rescued 71 people, nearly all girls and women, in firefights that killed many Boko Haram militants in villages near the northeastern city of Maiduguri, Nigerias military said Thursday. Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria are the four African countries which have been directly affected by the growing threat of Boko Haram in recent months.
