Suit: Ex-Vols player punched for helping woman in rape case

Two more women were added to the lawsuit Wednesday, which alleges Tennessee “intentionally acted by an official policy of deliberate indifference to known sexual assaults so as to create a hostile sexual environment”.

Jones allegedly unleashed on sophomore Drae Bowles after the wide receiver was threatened and got into a bloody brawl with another teammate, the Tennessean reported Wednesday.

194. After this assault by Maggitt, on Sunday, Bowles called Coach Jones to relate what had happened.

Bowles did say that Jones apologized a couple of hours later, but at that point, if what Bowles is saying is true, the damage had been done. Bowles transferred to UT Chattanooga shortly after the 2014 incident.

As portrayed in the lawsuit, Bowles found the woman, a friend of his, crying in a parking lot in the early hours of November 16, 2014, and helped her call 911 and get an ambulance.

201. Orta further acknowledged that UT football player Curt Maggitt had also, in a separate incident, confronted Drae Bowles in the team locker room and that Head Coach Butch Jones had “instructed the team to stay away from Bowles and Bowles was given time away from the team”.

@Vol_Football via Twitter Drae Bowles said he “broke down and cried” after Jones ripped into him.

The next day, Bowles was confronted by two teammates at Smokey’s Sports Grill when Geraldo Orta and Marlin Lane approached Bowles who was sitting alone and confronted him before strength coach Brandon Myles intervened and physically restrained Orta and Lane. Both Orta and Lane then followed Bowles out of the dining hall before being restrained by Myles yet again.

The Knoxville Police Department has refused to release the records on two of the players accused of rape and is being sued by Knoxville News Sentinel.

If Jones called Bowles a traitor and said he betrayed his team and he was ostracized because he helped a rape victim as the legal filing says, I can’t imagine how Jones survives something so abhorrent, even if Tennessee wins the SEC.

The University of Tennessee is in a bad spot publicly after the latest story about the sexual assault allegations they are facing went viral, making football coach Butch Jones look like a Grade A a-hole.

Williams told police that Orta put a “hit” out on Bowles following the incident.

Johnson and Williams were charged with aggravated rape in the case.

The increased scrutiny on the school has led to a resurfacing of allegations against former quarterback Peyton Manning.

Johnson has been suspended from all team-related activities.

This is just one component of an overarching federal lawsuit against Tennessee’s athletics department.
