‘Sully’ Delivers Top Five September Opening with $35.5 Million

Directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Tom Hanks as Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, Sully opened at #1 with an estimated $35.5 million, the fifth largest September opening of all-time, largest September opening for Warner Bros.by almost $12 million (The Town / $23.8m) and largest post-Labor Day opening of all-time. The opening for the picture marks the fifth largest September opening of all-time and the largest September opening for a Warner Bros. release, surpassing the $23.8 million for The Town.

“Sully” kicks off the fall movie season, when Hollywood studios roll out their most award-worthy films and performances.

Taking second place with $15 million was the Screen Gems thriller “When the Bough Breaks” starring Morris Chestnut and Regina Hill. The horror film came DOA with $1.4-M after receiving a D grade from audiences. The new animated film featuring the voices of Matthias Schweighofer, Aylin Tezel and Ilka Bessin manages to earn approximately $3.4 million in its first week, despite scathing reviews (15% on Rotten Tomatoes). It’s audience rating on CinemaScore was a B.

Rounding out the top five is another newcomer “The Wild Life”. Since they didn’t invest a lot in it as it was setup elsewhere, the film did $3.4 million for its opening weekend and was largely deried and not expected to hang around long.

“Don’t Breathe” was in the third place, with an estimated 8.2 million dollars in ticket sales this weekend and 66.8 million dollars over three weeks of showings. Captain Phillips opened to $25.7 million and also had a great multiplier, finishing with a domestic total of $107 million and a worldwide take of $219 million, against a $55 million budget. It’s weekend drop was 43 percent.

Still the top grossing film on the global top 10 is The Secret Life of Pets which has now taken $789 million during its box office run. Where available, the latest global numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included. “Suicide Squad”, $10.1 million. 5. The same could also be said of Pete’s Dragon, whose estimated $2.9 million has brought it to $70 million domestically, but still needs more than might be possible to break even on its costs before exiting theaters.
