Sully flies high and lands smoothly at the box office
Award-winning actor Tom Hanks said Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger is a hero, the character he played on the new movie directed by Clint Eastwood. It also marks a huge moment for director Clint Eastwood as his highest ever opening, eclipsing his previous personal directorial best of $18 million for 2000’s Space Cowboys. It could also surpass airline drama movie “Flight” starred by Denzel Washington that opened with $24.9 million and a total of $93 million in the US.

“Sully” kicks off the fall movie season, when Hollywood studios roll out their most award-worthy films and performances. “Sully” cost Warner Bros. and financing partners like Village Roadshow about $60 million to make before promotion costs.
The film should have legs over the coming weeks as audiences gave it an “A” CinemaScore and now has an 84% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Still the top grossing film on the global top 10 is The Secret Life of Pets which has now taken $789 million during its box office run.
“When the Bough Breaks”, which has modest $10 million production budget, stars Morris Chestnut and Regina Hall as a couple who desperately wants a baby. However the surrogate soon shows signs of becoming a threat as she develops a psychotic fixation on the husband.
Rory Bruer, Sony’s president of worldwide distribution, echoed that sentiment, stressing: “The Perfect Guy’s box office was way beyond anyone’s expectations”. Don’t Breathe dropped to third place this weekend with $8.2 million and is closing in on $70 million domestically.

Warners’ Suicide Squad placed # 4 in its 6th weekend with $5.7-M for a North American take of $307.4-M. But below it, surprise entry The Wild Life debuted with an estimated $3.4 million. The Light Between Oceans, starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, tumbled 62 percent in its second weekend to $1.8 million for a $9.4 million cume. A glaring exception was this weekend’s debut of The Disappointments Room.
