Sully lands at the top of the USA box office

Sullenberger recalls the events of January 15, 2009, when U.S. Airways Flight 1549 was in serious trouble.

While Sully’s “miracle” landing on the river made him a national hero, what the world didn’t know was that he had to fight to justify his decision not to attempt to return to an airport and to land in the river instead. Miraculously, everybody onboard survived.

“And now I thank God every night”.

As the new Tom Hanks film, Sully, arrives in theaters Friday, the children of the “Miracle on the Hudson”, are thanking the real-life captain who saved their loved ones’ life. “And this movie is choc-a-block with stuff that you don’t expect”.

“To me, just standing on the wing was actually very peaceful, and then I realized people are panicking and people are in freezing water and I better do something to help out”, Michael recalled. Sully left me breathless.

The telling of the story was thorough and interesting. “It was the conflict, the drama that Sully had to go through”.

The movie did a great job preserving the tension through to the end of the film when things finally begin to resolve and questions are answered.

As for Sully, the passengers agreed without hesitation that his actions were heroic and that he, not they, deserves the spotlight of a Hollywood movie.

I’m going to try to make this one (relatively) short and sweet, because that’s exactly what Sully is – a clean, compact, yet dynamic retelling of an event that, over six years later, remains one of the most memorable moments in post 9/11 American history.

One scene in particular that comes to mind from his “Captain Phillips” role was when Hanks was taken aboard the navy vessel after his ordeal.

“It’s one of the best things that ever happened- gave me perspective”.

While we knows the story of Captain Sullenberger and his miraculous landing, it’s harder to imagine what it would be like in his shoes.

There were so many flashbacks in this movie I got lost in the timeline. I had to wipe my eyes a couple times. He told me he was holding an airplane for me in Greensboro.

Sully and his co-pilot, First Officer Jeff Skiles (Aaron Eckhart), had a ugly realization just minutes after takeoff when a flock of Canadian geese, flew into their plane’s two engines and completely destroyed them.
