Sully Tops Weekend Box Office With $35.5 Million

The figures certainly seem to bear this out, as according to distributers Warner Bros an estimated 80 per cent of those who turned out this weekend were over the age of 35.

Opening at number one this weekend is Sully, the Clint Eastwood-directed Tom Hanks-starrer that kicks off this year’s Oscar season.

Still the top grossing film on the global top 10 is The Secret Life of Pets which has now taken $789 million during its box office run. Sully, the story of the famed pilot Chesley Sullenberger, seems made for award consideration, with director Clint Eastwood on board, and a supporting cast that includes Laura Linney and Aaron Eckhart. Considering the film has a production budget of a reported $60 million, this was a very strong start for the picture, especially for the month of September, which is typically not a big month for major releases.

“When The Bough Breaks” features Morris Chestnut and Regina Hall as a childless couple who engage a surrogate that becomes psychotic and unsafe. “Suicide Squad” took fourth place with $5.7 million, while the animated pic “The Wild Life” rounded out the top five with a dim $3.4 million. (But it cost just $10 million to produce.) Results were worse for other new movies.

Psychological thriller and fellow newcomer When the Bough Breaks also showed well, finishing at #2 with an estimated $15 million. Not the most exciting weekend at the box office, but it’s September.

“When the Bough Breaks” generated a B CinemaScore with an audience that was 62 percent female and 61 percent over 25 with Sony distribution president Rory Bruer asserting that those numbers indicate holding power in the coming weeks. “Sully”, $35.5 million ($9.5 million international). 2.

Meanwhile another, more positively reviewed, Sony film Don’t Breathe secured the third spot on the chart after making $8.2 million.

Further down the list came Kubo and the Two Strings in sixth with $3.2m (£2.4m), followed by Pete’s Dragon with $2.9m (£2m). The film, which carries a $16 million price tag and was shot in 2014 by D.J. Caruso, centers on a hidden room in the attic at a rural home. “Sausage Party”, $2.3 million ($4.2 million international). Bridge of Spies opened to $15.4 million, and had an incredible multiplier, finishing with $72.3 million domestic and a worldwide haul worth $165.5 million – all against a $40 million budget.
