Summer food service program
The Madison Metropolitan School District Summer Foods Program kicked off Monday at Elver Park. For many, these are the best meals of the day.

“I am pleased to announce the sites for the Summer Food Service Program today”, said Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz.
This year the Senate Agriculture Committee included my Hunger Free Summer for Kids Act in legislation to reauthorize child nutrition programs. This summer, Madison is including adults in its program at three sites to make it more welcoming to families. He continued with, “Our hope is that this event and these open sites demonstrate that families are not alone in the struggle to put food on the table”. Hundreds of thousands of OH students rely on the school lunch program, and many of them don’t have access to healthy and filling meals when school cafeterias close for the summer.
At Propel, we’re doing our part to help improve access to Summer Meals, both in Alabama and across the country.
“We are so grateful to the city to be able to expand our summer meal program”, Superintendent Jennifer Cheatham said. But for some students on the free or reduced school lunch programs, that might mean the end of regular, healthy meals.

Last summer, the Frederick Community Action Agency served more than 16,000 meals. Although not all free school breakfast and lunch programs are closed to needy children in the summer, a lot of them still are, including free dinner programs.
