Sunday’s National Football League roundup: Eagles knock off Patriots

If the Eagles beat both Washington and NY, they’ll have a 95 percent chance to reach the postseason, according to the Times’ algorithms, but a loss to Washington would set the team’s playoff hopes back to about six percent.

The Eagles now are a bit closer to winning the weirdest division in the NFL. In the end the Eagles may have found a new way to win with limiting the amount of pressure on its receivers and relying more on four running backs.

“We’ve got a pretty important game coming up, so I think that’s where we’re at”, Brady said. Elias Sports Bureau research notes that that is the second-longest streak without losing three straight games in National Football League history behind the San Francisco 49ers, who went 291 games without three consecutive losses from 1980-99. Cornerback Kevin Johnson, a first-round draft pick cornerback who must have a bunch of confidence, obviously will say something about Patriots quarterback Tom Brady to at least sort of stir the pot, right? Fans tell Action News the win couldn’t have come at a better time since the team’s next three games are at home.

New England was dominated on special teams, giving up a blocked punt and a punt return for touchdowns. It’s always sad when Flacco’ing a team ranks so highly, but this was a penalty worth almost half of the field with the Patriots up by 7 in the 2nd quarter. Gronkowski demands so much attention on defense that I doubt the Eagles’ defense would of been able to contain him.

The 38-year-old Brady got off to a good start in the first half of Sunday night’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles at the Gillette Stadium, throwing two touchdown passes.

New England (10-2) came back, taking advantage of an onside kick and a fumble to turn a 21-point deficit into a one-score game in the final minute.

“Sometimes they don’t see in them what I see in them”, Kelly said of his players.

The Patriots hold a three-game lead over the New York Jets in the AFC East. But if the season ended today, they would not have a first-round bye for the first time since 2009. It took eight plays for the Eagles to go 59 yards for the first of five unanswered touchdowns.

“This is as hard a place as there is to win, and against the best quarterback in the business to get a win and to do it after the adversity we faced the last three weeks, it speaks to the character of these men.”

“I think everybody would love that”, Brady said. It was a game in which the 49ers (4-8) looked like the sure loser even after they rallied to tie the game at 20 with 1:42 remaining, Gabbert doing most of the damage with his legs and scoring the tying touchdown on a 44-yard scramble up the middle. Goode scooped it up and ran it 24 yards for the touchdown to send the teams into the break tied 14-all.

Nobody is going to feel bad for Bill Belichick, Tom Brady or the Patriots about blown calls. He also returned kicks and punts.

Newton, who completed 28-of-41 passes for 331 yards, drove the Panthers 75 yards in 11 plays for the game-winning score.

James White led a shorthanded Patriots offense with a career-high 115 receiving yards out of the backfield, while Danny Amendola posted seven receptions and 62 receiving yards plus a touchdown in his return to action following a knee injury.
