Sunday’s recap: Cubs 6, Brewers 5

“It was opening day for me”, Nathan said after the game, via the Chicago Tribune.

The Brewers tacked on two more runs in the fifth.

Chase Anderson will pitch for the Brewers tonight as they open a four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Miller Park. Tommy La Stella had run himself into an inning-ending out at second base in the fifth after a single to left-center that he tried to stretch into a double. The 31-year-old rookie hasn’t had much run support lately, as the Brewers have totaled four runs in his last three starts, and he didn’t get a decision last time out despite allowing two runs and three hits in six innings of a 3-2 loss Tuesday at Pittsburgh.

ORIOLES 5, INDIANS 2: In Baltimore, Mark Trumbo hit his major league-leading 30th home run, and Kevin Gausman pitched seven shutout innings to lead Baltimore. So after Junior Guerra exited the game in the seventh with one out, and Will Smith put four straight runners on, Rizzo came to the plate with the bases loaded, one out, a two-run deficit, and possibly a bit of a chip on his shoulder. That was only the beginning; there were another three stolen bases while Lester was pitching, plus several attempts that nearly certainly would have been successful if not for foul balls (though, to be fair, Jake Elmore was also caught stealing in the fourth).

Joe Nathan will join the Cubs on Sunday, manager Joe Maddon said.

Nathan’s odyssey began when he gave up a leadoff triple to Jonathan Villar and a walk to Hernan Perez.

Key Moment: There were lots of moments in the seventh-inning rally that could qualify for this spot, but I’ve decided that the key moment today was Joe Nathan’s three consecutive strikeouts that preceded the rally in the bottom of the sixth.

Junior Guerra yielded just one unearned run over 6 1/3 innings Sunday in a no-decision against the Cubs. Lester is 2-2 with a 2.22 ERA in four starts against the Brewers and won both meetings last season.

But the lead evaporated against Smith, normally one of the league’s toughest left-handed relievers. Even with big-time hitters such as Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant healthy and playing almost everyday, the team managed to score just 120 runs in those 28 games without Fowler.

And Addison Russell had to leave the game in the middle innings.

In two starts against the Brewers last season, Lester went 2-0 with a very solid 1.38 ERA.
