“There have been managers come and gone and everything has been very close to the bottom every season”, said Moyes.

“They tell me that the little boy Gooch, he can do two or three jobs”.

Jordan Pickford was due to start tomorrow’s EFL Cup second-round tie with Shrewsbury Town anyway, but Mannone’s setback adds to an injury list that is growing by the week.

Moyes was manager of an Everton team that lost to Shrewsbury in the FA Cup third round in January 2003, and while the Shrews are now 20th in League One, the Sunderland boss has warned his players they can not afford to take anything for granted tomorrow.

His comments, following Sunday’s 2-1 home derby defeat to Middlesbrough, sparked dismay from some fans who had hoped for better following four successive battles to preserve top-flight status.

“You don’t want to go out and lose any game”.

Moyes, chief executive Martin Bain and the club’s recruitment staff are working daily from morning until midnight to bring much-needed fresh talent to Wearside.

‘Because we maybe have to sign several players, I don’t know if we’d have that kind of cash to pay on just one player (McCarthy),’ said Moyes, whose said have lost their opening two Premier League games. There was no point in me telling people untruths – I wouldn’t do that. It could be, and we’re a little bit anxious about it, but I couldn’t tell you how good or bad it is yet.

But Moyes remains confident of competing for and attracting “any player”, is closing in on a couple of new signings and “hopes to surprise” people in the coming days. “We know that upsets can happen and we have got to make sure it doesn’t happen”.

“Our budget is not at the level of many clubs out buying at the moment, but I’ve got full faith in the owner”.

“You have got to remember, I didn’t even come in right away, and you have got to say what has happened form the (final) day of last season to this period now?”
