Sunderland cull Canaries in relegation six-pointer

Sunderland improved their chances of avoiding the drop while leaving Norwich City nervously looking over their shoulders by securing a 3-0 win from their only three shots on target at Carrow Road on Saturday.

Norwich picked up the victory the last time these two met after they raced into a three-goal lead at the Stadium of Light before conceding a late consolation to youngster Duncan Watmore.

He said: “Since 2008 Norwich have either been fighting relegation or battling to win promotion every season, so this is nothing new for us”.

The Black Cats are now 18th in the Premier League table ahead of a pivotal trip to Norwich on Saturday where defeat would leave them seven points adrift of safety with five games left to play.

Allardyce has never been relegated from the top-flight and he could be on course to mastermind another great escape to emulate Sunderland’s last-ditch revival under Dick Advocaat 12 months ago. A repeat would give Norwich 39 points for the season.

The visitors wrapped up victory in stoppage time when Sebastian Larsson played in substitute Watmore for a simple finish.

“But you have to bear in mind the other teams are still chasing us”.

“Everyone knows we’ve got the talent, but today we showed how good we are and we stuck to the gameplan”. While the lack of a consistent and reliable goalscorer – their last 13 top flight goals have been scored by 10 different players – is another obvious issue for Neil.

“Khazri didn’t quite go to the level we know he can and we have people on the bench who can come and did a little better”.

NORWICH, England (AP) – Sunderland took a big step in its fight for English Premier League survival as it beat fellow strugglers Norwich 3-0 on Saturday. Wisdom’s challenge on Borini was brainless and the game turned on that one moment of madness.

Norwich’s final four games see them take on Arsenal, Manchester United, Watford and Everton.

Asked if his side needs to find a killer instinct in front of goal, the 61-year-old replied: “After the last two games and not scoring, yes”.

Norwich City is now at the 17th spot of the league table, precariously close to the relegation zone as they are only four points above Sunderland, who heads the bottom three teams, in the overall standings.

“I thought I might get stick in the changing room after I had a go at my team-mates”.

Sunderland grabbed the second in the 53rd minute when Borini pinged a ideal low ball across goal and Defoe arrived at the far post to tuck away his 16th goal of the season.

“It was a massive game coming into it and we all knew that”, continued Watmore.
