Sunderland off bottom of Premier League with derby win

History repeated itself on Wearside where Sam Allardyce became the fourth successive Sunderland manager to preside over a victory against Newcastle United in his second game in charge.

With Sunderland failing to claim a victory so far this season, claiming three draw and six losses in the process, the Black Cats are desperate for a confidence booster. Jones looks a lot better at left back and he thoroughly deserved a goal after being unlucky last week. He rejoined Newcastle in 2005 for the final season of his professional career, where his only goal came at home to Middlesbrough.

“I think Colo (Coloccini) leaned into him, he (Fletcher) was never going to get the ball and that decision has cost the game”, McClaren said.

‘We’ve taken full advantage of a piece of good fortune, ‘ he said. I’m chuffed to bits.

Sunderland’s Steven Fletcher, right, vies for the ball with Newcastle United’s captain Fabricio Coloccini, left, during their English Premier League soccer match between Sunderland and Newcastle United at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland, England, Sunday, October 25, 2015. It was a brilliant game. In Newcastle and Sunderland, fans have not just been starved of good football and enjoyment from seeing their team play for too long, but they’ve also been starved of hope.

“Obviously, we need to worry because we haven’t won yet, but to have a derby in this situation and to have the possibility to win the derby is a great chance to take”.

“My job is to remind the players of the importance of the game and control their emotions”.

Allardyce sympathized with Newcastle, whom he managed in 2007-8, over the red card, suggesting: “I think a penalty’s enough (punishment)”.

“Even with 10 men in the second half we still controlled it but the referee decisions are out of your control”. He sent over a lovely cross for Fletcher to strike a low finish first time beyond Elliot with four minutes to go.

The defeat poses serious questions for head coach Steve McLaren, who has now only won once in his first 10 games as boss.

“I’ve never sat and felt so comfortable”. It’s an unbelievable feeling.

Brought on after O’Shea got injured and we all thought the worst.

“The red card obviously made a huge difference as well”.

“We tried for Leighton Baines at Wigan and Phil Jagielka at Sheffield United, but I got Jose Enrique from Villarreal and eventually Habib Beye from Marseille and Abdoulaye Faye from Bolton on transfer deadline day”.

“I am devastated for the fans and feel harshly done to”. His combination play with the attacking livewire that is Moussa Sissoko should reap its rewards over time, provided that the team remains tight at the other end.

Another supporter who made a long journey to the game was David Wilson, from Fulham, London. After scoring the first goal against Leicester City last game week, the Saints collapsed in the second half to allow Jamie Vardy to steal a last gasp point for the Foxes.
