And according to a report on Goal.com, Anichebe is more fancied to fill into Borini’s shoes ahead of Dimitar Berbatov, Nicklas Bendtner and Peter Odemwingie who were all released by their respective clubs.
Sunderland have tonight signed free-agent striker Victor Anichebe – and he could make his debut against former club Everton.
“I’m really happy to be here at a great club”, he told the club’s official website.
The 25-year-old suffered the torn ligament while taking a free-kick in the 1-1 draw with Southampton on Saturday before being substituted.
So long as Jermain Defoe remains fit he is unlikely to see a lot of first-team starts, but the fact he offers something entirely different to the veteran forward is likely to see him utilised often.
“We played against Sunderland last season and I was watching from the side, just watching Defoe, his movement. He knows me inside out and I feel like he can get the best out of me”, added Anichebe.
Although the Black Cats broke their transfer record on Gabon midfielder Ibrahim Ndong, Moyes was unable to complete a deal for a new striker, failing in a bid to sign Norwich City striker Steven Naismith.
David Moyes was only appointed Sunderland manager on 23 July – after Sam Allardyce left to take charge of England – and lost his first two Premier League games, including the 2-1 defeat by Middlesbrough.

Their next fixture once the global break concludes is a home clash against Moyes’ and Anichebe’s former side Everton.
